An inter-college debate was organized at Khalsa College of Education by The Tribune group of newspapers here today. Students from 12- colleges from the city participated in the discussion. As many as 24 students presented the two sides of the topic “life in the time of social media”.

The newly appointed Social Commissioner, Gurloveleen Singh Sandhu, was the chief guest and Registrar, Khalsa University, JS Dhillon was the guest of honor on the occasion. Head of the Department of Sociology, GNDU, Dr Gurpreet Bal, and head of the Department of Political Science, GNDU, Dr Jagroop Singh Sekhion, judged the contestants.

Most students stressed on the needs for cutting down dependency on social media for information and using it responsibly. Others in support of the extensive use of social media cited sharing information and creating new channels for networking in the global community as its advantages.

Some debaters also highlighted recent incidents of social media popularity, including the JNU sedition case, a BSF jawan, who viral accusing officials of denying basic amenities, besides aspects of cyber bullying and trolling. Jaspreet Kaur from Khalsa College was adjudged winner of the debate while second place was bagged by Preetika from Khalsa College of Education. The third price went to Harkiran Kaur of DAV College. Consolation prices were also given to students. Benu Sharma of SR Government College, Sukhwinder Singh from Amritsar College Of Engineering and Technology and Simran Kaur from DAV college were awarded consolation prizes.

Khalsa College of Education was declared the best college. Other colleges, which participated in the debate, include Amritsar College Of Engineering and SR Govt College. The Tribune team, which organised the debate comprised Ajay Jairath, Randhir Singh, Varinder Sharma and Bimal Koul.
