KU Hockey Academy’s Five More Players Selected For National Camp

At least five women players from the Hockey Academy at local Khalsa University under the aegis of Khalsa College Charitable Society were today selected for the national camp to be held at Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) ahead of Hockey Test Match later this year in Australia. In total 28 women hockey players were selected from all over the country for the camp in which six are from of this local academy.

The players selected for the camp include Ritu, Gagandeep Kaur, Amarinder Kaur, Reet and Priyanka, said the Vice Chancellor Dr. GS Walia who congratulated the students for their entry into the national hockey training camp. He said that the academy recently appointed Dronacharya Award winner international repute hockey coach Mr. Baldev Singh as its Chief Coach.

Dr. Walia said that he was hopeful that they would perform well and would represent the country in the international upcoming events. KU Pro Chancellor, S. Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina also congratulated the winner students and hoped that they will perform well during the training and will get placed in the national hockey team in the coming times.

“It is an honour that they have been selected for national camp. They are the star players of the academy and will bring laurels to the nation and the state of Punjab in coming years’’, said Mr.Chhina. He said the players are getting top class coaching in the hockey and its players have already performed at various national and international level tournaments.
It was recently that player Ritu was selected for the Hockey India (Women) team’s national camp which was held at Bangluru (Karnataka) last month. Mr. Chhina said that the academy would flourish and its players are eyeing to represent the India in the next 2020 Olympics games. “We have targeted that our students play in national, international and even in the coming Olympics’’, said KU Director (Sports) Dr. Kanwaljit Singh.

They said that the focus is especially on the women sports and the management was already in the process to establish world class infrastructure for the sports. `The hostels and playgrounds are in the pipeline for the academy which is having 35 junior and senior players so far’’, said Mr. Chhina adding that Khalsa College Charitable Society was committed to give impetus to the women sports.
